Esposende, an old naval station, maritime fortress, mediaeval dockyard, settled, during the Inquisition in 1258 as "Esposendi" and belongs to S. Miguel de Cepães. In the XVI century D. Frei Bartolomeu dos Mártires accepted its rural value (1560) and D. Sebastião endowed this "pobra" of fishermen as Villa (19 August 1572).
The Charter reflects the value that Esposende and Ofir had during the "euphory of the Discoveries" and reported in D. Manuel I Charter, from 1491, that was given to the carpenters and caulkers of Fão.
The land faces to the Ocean, a powerful source of Commercial and Tourism, reflects the secrets of the marine soul. Esposende is also Caminho of Santiago. For the crossing the pilgrims went to Barca do Lago (nowadays turistic sojourn). The agreement of 22 of December in 1640, established that this crossing never were extinguished. |
